My name is Colin. I live approximately one block from St Timothy’s and am interested in coming by and checking out your community. I am a Roman Catholic and want to be honest in that I have no intention or interest at this time in converting to Orthodoxy. I currently split my time commuting to the Traditional Latin Masses in Pismo Beach and Camarillo or to St. Anne’s Byzantine Catholic Church in San Luis Obispo. I feel called “East” but cannot, at this time, make a consistent commute. Since there is very little distinction between Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholics in terms of belief (at least not according to numerous Byzantine Catholics I’ve spoken with online and elsewhere), I would like to learn about Eastern Orthodoxy. I have a friend who recently left Catholicism officially for a ROCOR parish and unfortunately (for the RC church he left and the ROCOR parish he joined) his intentions were simply to run away from the modernism in the Roman clergy that is so rampant since Vatican II. This does a disservice to the Roman Church as well as to his new Church. But this is what I tend to find even in Eastern Catholic circles. They are full of ex Roman converts who flee the liturgical innovation of Vatican II and it’s aftermath.

But I’m not interested in arguing for or against Vatican II. I would like very much, if possible, to attend a study or meet with Father and learn about Orthodoxy, without feeling the pressure to convert. I’ll also admit I have no intention of trying to leech members out of Orthodoxy and into Catholicism since in Lompoc the only two representations of Roman Catholicism we have are sadly wanting in every aspect. But I feel called East and while I don’t know yet if that means as an Eastern Catholic in communion with Rome or as an Eastern Orthodox outside of Communion with Rome, I do know that as I am now, I don’t have the knowledge or experience of the East to properly discern and make an informed decision. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

    God Bless!

      Colin,

      The Lord’s blessing!

Asking your forgiveness for such a delayed response. Please come and visit us anytime, especially since you live so close to the church. I am free to talk whenever you’d like, even if it is over a cup of coffee. We have services almost everyday and some big feasts coming up (Dormition of the Mother of God celebrated the evening of Aug 14th being one). Please come by and pray with us, meet the community, and experience Orthodoxy. We would be honored to meet you and have you as a guest.

      In Christ,
      Fr John Valadez

Having read this I thought it was extremely informative.
I appreciate you spending some time and energy to put this informative article together.
I once again find myself spending a lot of time both reading and leaving comments.
But so what, it was still worthwhile!
